Why Might a Baby Be Born Early?

Dec 28, 2018 | Birth Injuries, Firm News

If you are pregnant, then you expect to remain pregnant for a full nine months. However, may mothers in Indiana end up in the hospital far earlier than their due date. When a baby is born early, it can sometimes be a serious situation. If the baby’s systems are not fully developed, the baby may suffer health consequences. Generally, doctors aim for every pregnancy to reach full term. In some cases, though, there are things that may trigger early labor.

According to KidsHealth, premature birth is anytime before 37 weeks. Some of the reasons your baby may come early are unpreventable but others are preventable. Your doctor should evaluate your risks during your prenatal care. For example, your doctor will carefully monitor your weight to ensure you do not gain too much, which could trigger early labor.

Health problems, especially diabetes, may lead to early labor as well. If you have a preexisting condition, your doctor may label your pregnancy high risk and you will have to see him or her more often to keep tabs on your health and your baby’s health. Your doctor will also advise you to avoid smoking and drinking, which also may lead to premature birth.

If you have had issues before with pregnancy, your chances of delivering early increase. In addition, being over the age of 35 or under the age of 17 increases the likelihood of a premature baby. Finally, a common reason many women give birth early is that they are carrying multiple babies. The body simply cannot carry more than one baby to term in most cases.
