Will you need to get your corrective eye surgery “touched up”?

Feb 19, 2020 | Firm News, Medical Malpractice, Surgery

Whether you have struggled with vision problems your whole life or you recently discovered you need glasses, the idea of a surgery that puts it all in the past may sound too good to be true.

Of course, the first risk you think about is terrifying. You go in for surgery to make your vision better, and you could come out blind.

It is important to learn as much as possible before undergoing vision correction surgery. Here are some of the other risks that you could encounter.

Enhancements, touch-ups and retreatments

In most cases, LASIK surgery is permanent. In many cases, you can walk in, get your corrective surgery and resume life with 20/20 vision the next day.

For the rest of the people who choose vision surgery, the first time is not the charm. In some cases, patients need to go back weeks or months to get their vision enhanced because the first surgery did not help them achieve all their vision goals.

Although the surgery is intended to be permanent, the surgery changes the eye as it is the day of surgery. Your doctor cannot account for how your eye may change throughout the rest of your life. If your eye changes as you get older, you may find that you need to go in again, to get your eyes adjusted to any changes that happened.

Other risks

The risk of needing an enhancement may not seem bad since you still get to your goal of having better vision without corrective lenses. Unfortunately, the risks do not stop there. Corrective eye surgery carries additional risks, such as:

  • Prolonged pain and discomfort
  • Nerve damage
  • Dry eyes
  • Impaired vision

It should be a red flag if your doctor is not willing to be straightforward about what you should know about your surgery. Before undergoing corrective eye surgery, talk to your doctor about both general risks and ask about any risks that could be specific to your case or condition.

If you or a loved one has been harmed due to a surgical error related to laser eye surgery, you may have grounds for a legal claim. Call 317-978-9973 or complete an online form today to discuss your legal options.
