How Do You Know If You Have Experienced a Placental Abruption?

Jun 6, 2018 | Birth Injuries, Firm News

Whether you have given birth in the past or are preparing for the birth of your first child in Indiana, going through pregnancy can be quite exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. Whenever you experience unexpected symptoms, it can be easy to worry about the health and well-being of your baby. Something that you may have heard of before is placental abruption. Fortunately, there are some common symptoms that you can be on the lookout for if you suspect something is amiss so you can get to a doctor before anything gets worse.

According to Baby Center, placental abruptions can be quite serious and leave the safety of you and your baby in danger if not recognized and addressed immediately. Most often occurring in the third trimester of pregnancy, this condition occurs when the placenta separates from the uterus before the baby is actually birthed. Diminishing the effect this condition can have on you and your baby is doable, but only when you are familiar with the symptoms. You should immediately reach out to your doctor if you are experiencing the following:

  • Tenderness in the uterus.
  • Premature labor.
  • Back pain.
  • Vaginal bleeding.
  • Cramping.
  • Decreased movement from your baby.

You may be at higher risk of experiencing a placental abruption if you smoke or drink, are older, are carrying multiples, have had preeclampsia before or have gestational hypertension among other things.
