Examining Common Medical Mistakes That Any Doctor Could Make

Feb 28, 2018 | Firm News, Medical Malpractice

When people in Indiana recognize a need to visit their doctor, they place a significant amount of trust in their health care provider’s ability to correctly diagnose their condition and recommend a treatment option that is effective and safe. However, all doctors are prone to make mistakes, especially if they are fatigued, careless or not communicating effectively with their patients and colleagues.

In a stunning report released by ABC News, approximately 251,454 people die every year in the United States as a result of medical errors. Many of these mistakes are preventable when doctors follow protocols and patients are well educated.

According to Newsmax Health, there are many common medical mistakes that any doctor could make. These include the following:

  • Poor hygiene and sanitation of surgical and medical instruments.
  • Leaving surgical tools inside of a person’s body.
  • Misdiagnosing conditions after inadequate research.
  • Performing surgery on the wrong body part.
  • Unnecessary testing.
  • Treating the wrong patient or prescribing the incorrect medication.

Patients who are concerned about their well-being and wish to be proactive to protect their safety can effectively do so by preparing ahead of time to meet with their doctor. They may choose to compile information related to their medical history, medications, and allergies. Patients should also make a list of questions to ask their doctor regarding their symptoms, any prescriptions and what to expect during treatment and recovery. Finally, smart patients will stay vigilant and play an active role in their treatment. If at any time they suspect that something is not right, they should immediately express their concern to their doctor.
