What Are Some Examples of Surgical Errors?

Aug 7, 2017 | Firm News, Medical Malpractice

From birth injuries that never should have occurred to mistakes involving the prescription of medication, there are many examples of medical malpractice. However, those which involve a surgical error can be especially devastating in Indianapolis, and in other cities across Indiana. When these mistakes occur, they can generate a wide variety of problems for patients and even their loved ones, from severe physical pain to mental trauma, financial turmoil and even the loss of life.

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, there are a number of different types of surgical errors that can occur. For example, wrong-patient surgery involves a physician carrying out an operation on the wrong patient, which may occur because two patients share a similar name, among other reasons. Or, patients may become victims of medical malpractice when a surgeon performs an operation on the wrong site. For example, wrong-site surgery may involve a patient undergoing surgery on the wrong side of his or her body. Moreover, patients may be exposed to the wrong procedure, which is also very serious.

Victims of surgical errors may suffer in many ways, whether they have permanent scars that never should have existed, serious pain due to a surgeon’s mistake or difficulty paying medical costs that have arisen due to medical malpractice. Furthermore, families may also go through emotional pain and financial problems when their loved one is subjected to a surgical error. When surgeons shatter the lives of patients over an error that never should have taken place, victims deserve justice.
