Are C-Sections Riskier Than a Vaginal Birth?

Jun 19, 2017 | Firm News, Pregnancy-Related Injuries

If you are pregnant in Indiana, you may be wondering about your delivery options. Babies can be delivered vaginally or through a Cesarean section. In some cases, it is essential for you to have your baby via a C-section to help protect your health or the health of your baby. However, many times it is optional. If you are considering a C-section, you may wonder if it carries more risks than a vaginal birth.

According to Women’s Health, C-sections are naturally riskier because they are a surgical procedure. It is generally recommended to not have one unless it is medically necessary. However, many women have chosen to have C-sections because it is more convenient. They are a scheduled operation, so a mother can choose when she will have her baby. In general, though, they are really only recommended if you have had a previous C-section, the baby is breech, you are pregnant with multiple babies, there are umbilical cord issues, you have an STI or the baby is very large.

C- sections are riskier because you are having your body opened up. This increases the chances of bleeding problems, infections, blood clots, uterine ruptures, injuries to the bowel or bladder and future issues with placenta implantation. In addition, the recovery time from a C-section is much longer than a vaginal birth.

It is recommended that you talk to your doctor about your options. If a C-section is medically necessary, then it is fine to proceed, but if you can have a vaginal birth, it is your best option. This information is only intended to educate and should not be interpreted as legal advice.
