What Is Preeclampsia?

There are a few different conditions you may develop as a result of pregnancy. Each has its own risks and issues. However, one of the more serious ones isĀ preeclampsia, which the American Pregnancy Association explains is a condition involving protein in the urine and high blood pressure. It is a condition that only occurs in pregnant women. Your Indiana doctor will check you throughout your pregnancy for preeclampsia because it is essential to control it.

Preeclampsia can be mild or severe. It has the potential to damage your organs and can be fatal. Your doctor must continue to monitor you to ensure you are okay if you have this condition. It can happen early in pregnancy. If it occurs and you are far away from your due date, it has to be kept under control. The main solution for the condition is delivering the baby, but if the baby is too little to be born, this leads to complications.

Your doctor will try to treat you with medications, bed rest and other changes until you can deliver the baby safely. Once you have the baby, the condition goes away, but if you suffered organ damage as a result, that will still need treatment.

You cannot prevent preeclampsia, but eating less salt, drinking enough water, getting regular exercise and eating healthy can help reduce your chances of getting it. You may be at higher risk for it if you are overweight, have a family history of it, have high blood pressure, are carrying multiples, are under 20 or over 40 or are a first-time mom.
