Does your health insurance status affect quality of care?

If you do not have health insurance in Indiana, then you may feel like it is difficult to get quality health care. This is likely not just your imagination. According to the National Institutes of Health, discrimination based on insurance happens. You may even have it happen if you have insurance. Some providers may discriminate due to the type of insurance you have.

This issue only increases the overall problems with health care in this country. Some doctors will not see people who have no insurance or insist on upfront payment. You may have your care delayed or you may not receive the level of care needed to ensure you stay healthy. This discrimination may lead to you being unable to find care when you need it or having to use higher cost care, such as emergency services.

Some providers may also not give you the same level of care. They may not prescribe testing or services you need because of your lack of insurance. Some doctors may even rush through your treatment or not give you the same attention as patients with insurance.

You may also put up barriers yourself when you do not have insurance. You may avoid care due to the costs or not be able to afford care. This may lead to health problems becoming worse and costlier in the long run.

The bottom line is that if you do not have insurance, providers may worry about your ability to pay for services. This leads to you not getting care unless you can pay upfront. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
