What causes cerebral palsy?

Parents all across Indiana want the best for their children, and you're no exception. But unfortunately, some things can't be prepared for, no matter how meticulous you are. If your child has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, you're likely looking for answers to many different questions.

One such question could be: what causes cerebral palsy? CerebralPalsy.org states that there are many different potential reasons for cerebral palsy to occur, as the cause itself is either brain malformation or brain injury. It can develop at any time during pregnancy, birth, or after birth. The long span of time it may occur over and the many different possibilities that can cause brain damage or malformation may make it difficult to pinpoint a cause.

Generally speaking, some common causes include negligence on the part of the hospital staff during or after delivery, or the failure of medical staff to catch something during the pregnancy that may have contributed to cerebral palsy later. However, there are also instances where one or both parents have either genetic or familial predispositions which could up certain risk factors for the development of cerebral palsy. It's possible for these predispositions to go unnoticed by the families until it is too late. However, having diagnostic testing done to determine a cause is still helpful, as it can give you an idea of what risks to expect if you plan on having more children in the future.

Not everything can be predicted or prepared for. However, if you're armed with knowledge through things like diagnostic tests and information gathering, you can be more prepared to face these difficult situations.
