Help your baby by caring for yourself

It is not unusual for an expectant mother to worry about her baby's health. And if you are pregnant, you no doubt want your baby to come into the world healthy and strong. But while you wait for the big day to arrive, you need to take good care of yourself. By taking measures to bolster your health, you are also supplementing your baby's well-being.

But what are some of the important steps you can take to help your baby prior to the delivery? Well, the following are things that can prove very beneficial:

  • Get in some exercise. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that pregnant women should exercise a minimum of six days a week for at least 30 minutes per day unless there are medical reasons to do otherwise.
  • Keep stress to a minimum. According to experts, stress may be the single greatest factor affecting a baby's birth weight as well as brain development. There are many stress-reducing techniques you can utilize, such as listening to soothing music, aromatherapy, and yoga.
  • Eat the right foods. It is best if your meals are rich in important nutrients, such as iron and folate protein. You may want to spread your food intake over several small meals during the day. Doing this could help prevent fatigue and feeling heavy.

While you likely want to do all you can to help ensure your baby comes into the world healthy and alert, there are some things that are out of your hands. It is the responsibility of your doctor to monitor your baby's development to make sure there are no complications. And while in the delivery room, the doctor and nurses all must pay close attention to both your and your baby's vital signs before, during and after the birth.

And if your baby is injured due to the doctor or staff failing to provide an acceptable level of care, you may wish to meet with an experienced medical malpractice attorney to discuss the possibility of taking legal action.
