An infant's difficulty reaching milestones may signal trouble

The birth of a baby can elicit a vast range of emotions. There is the exhilaration of bringing a new life into the world and excitement of watching that life grow. But parenting can also be fraught with challenges and anxieties.

After all, it is a parent's responsibility to protect and care for this little person, and prepare him or her to grow into a self-sufficient adult. And to this end, it is extremely important for parents to be fully aware that their child is healthy and developing at an appropriate rate.

If a newborn has recently become a member of your household, you may want to educate yourself on the various important developmental milestones that children typically achieve as they get older. You want to take note if your child is learning to do such things as crawl, stand and form words within a typical timeframe.

If it appears that your child is not progressing appropriately, you may want to express your concerns to your physician. A physician can assess your child to see if there are any problems. It is possible that a visible issue is only temporary and will not affect your child later in his or her life.

However, if it is discovered that your child is suffering from something serious, such as cerebral palsy, or other brain-related condition, he or she may require special care. Moreover, you have a right to know what exactly caused the condition and if it could have been prevented. And if it could have been prevented, you may wish to consider filing a medical malpractice lawsuit against the responsible party or parties.
